Ed Behne Memorial Wounded Soldier Hunt

The hunt took place on Ed's birthday 1/2/09

John Schwebel

I want to thank you for the opportunity you extended me to hunt on the Sombrerito Ranch in January. This was a fantastic trip that I would not have thought possible. It was truly an experience of a lifetime for me, and I am grateful for your generosity.

Most of all, I am very thankful for the support people here at home give to the soldiers that have served their country. This support is what keeps the servicemen and women serving overseas. Without the Country behind us it would be very difficult to stay focused on our missions. Let´s hope that the support stays strong until the mission is accomplished and everyone at home is secure. If there is anything at all I can contribute to your organization, please keep me in mind as I would like to show my support for the troops that continue to serve.

Thank You,
John Schwebel

about John...

"Sergeant John Schwebel joined the Navy after graduating from Alvin High School. He served on active duty from February 1991 through December 1994 as a Radiological Controls Monitor. After completing his service with the Navy John then attended college at Alvin Community College and Texas A&M starting in January 1995 and graduating with an Engineering degree in December 1999. After the terrorist attacks on September 11th John felt it was his duty to serve his country once again. This time he jumped ship and enlisted in the Army Reserves in 2002. He deployed to Iraq in early 2003. He served as a Civil Affairs Sergeant on a six man team in Baghdad. On June 23, 2003 John's team was parked on a busy Baghdad street. John and two others were dismounted while the drivers of the two vehicles remained behind the wheel. A truck drove by and it appeared at the time that they were throwing trash at the team. John then noticed the "vegetable can" that landed near him and his two team members was smoking. Before they had time to react the can exploded peppering the three personnel, John receiving twelve pieces of shrapnel. He then began administering first aid to one of the other injured teammates who was going into shock. Despite his injuries John then drove one of the two vehicles back to the base while other team members administered first aid to the other soldiers. John received an Army Commendation medal with "V" device for Valor for his actions that day along with a Purple Heart."
